FYCMA now has a restroom adapted for ostomy patients

FYCMA (Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga) now has an adapted restroom for ostomates, making the Málaga venue one of the pioneering facilities in its sector to incorporate such equipment. In this way, the center responds to the general request of the Federation of Associations of Ostomates of Spain (FAPOE) and joins the network of municipal spaces that already have a bathroom meeting the needs of this group

FYCMA (Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga), part of Málaga City Council, now features an adapted restroom for ostomates, specifically located on the first floor of the building. This new facility enhances the accessibility of the venue, whose management is committed to ensuring that both the spaces and the activities conducted within are accessible to all users.

Responding to the request of the Federation of Associations of Ostomates (FAPOE), which encompasses over twenty associations nationwide, FYCMA has equipped a bathroom with the necessary technical features to ensure that ostomates can use the toilet under the highest standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and privacy. These features include, among others, a toilet specifically designed for the proper handling of ostomy bags, a counter with dimensions and placement that facilitate the process, cleaning and hygiene accessories, a portable step, waste disposal elements, adequate lighting conditions, and clearly indicated signage.

With this initiative, FYCMA becomes one of the first congress and trade fair centres in Spain to incorporate such equipment, extending the concept of accessible toilets beyond mobility issues and enhancing the facilities available to ostomates, allowing them to participate in events and activities on equal terms.

These toilets complement the recently inaugurated ones for ostomates on the beaches of Malagueta, Misericordia, and Pedregalejo. All these efforts are part of the Málaga City Council’s commitment to accessibility, specifically addressing the needs of the ostomate community.

It is worth mentioning that FYCMA’s accessibility policy is structured around the UNE 170001 Universal Accessibility certification and measures such as creating accessibility chains to ensure that everyone can reach the building and its various operational spaces, specialized training plans for the staff, appropriate signage, translation and interpretation services, reserved spaces in rooms, adapted furniture—including lifts for auditorium platforms—, tactile maps, and smart orientation devices using Bluetooth technology for visually impaired individuals.
